Canterbury Tales

The girls and I are reading Canterbury Tales. I found an easy to read translation and we are thoroughly enjoying the brilliance, insight, courage, humor and wit of Chaucer. What's amazing to me: we are reading something written in the late 14th century and finding that human nature hasnt changed much over the centuries!

Three Weeks.

Paige is getting married in three weeks. THREE WEEKS!  Nineteen days to be exact.

Our house is filled with projects in various stages of completion:  material, scissors, ribbon, lace, and silverware all lined up assembly line style for us to make the napkins for the recption; little flower girl dresses waiting for final touches; boxes of wedding decorations stashed in the corner for the big day; suitcases and containers packed for Paige's move to AZ; honeymoon clothes picked out and ready for the cruise; bridesmaids' gifts tucked away in their black velvet boxes; candlesticks, vases and table cloths painted, polished and ironed - ready to go.

Volunteers recruited. Rentals confirmed. Reception planned. It''s all coming together.

Friends are rallying and church community is helping.

Paige is getting married.

Yay for Taylor!

Hopefully, Taylor will be joining the PCC Orchestra this year. We are also hoping she can take violin private instruction and ballet. They are limiting the number of high school students they allow in, so we will see...

Biking in Balboa!!

Another milesone victory for me!! I spent the afternoon bike riding around lovely Balboa Island today!

Ron and I had started biking together before I got sick and had a goal of wanting to ride our bikes from Pasadena to Huntington Beach. We were practicing by riding to Sierra Madre and back and I got up to 20 miles along the beach one day when I had brought my bike to Bolsa Chica Beach.

But, today, we put our bikes in the van and drove down to Balboa, spent a couple hours reading on the beach and then took our bikes across the ferry to the island and rode all through the neighborhoods.

This is the first time I've been on a bike since getting sick- and it was so wonderful to be able to ride! The terrain by the beach is pretty flat so it wasnt difficult at all!

Hopefully, we can keep this up and work ourselves back into our goal of riding TO the beach someday!

I am enjoying the strength and health I've been experiencing. With the unpredictability of Wegners, I want to take advantage of it and do all I can. I just dont know if I have any flare ups in my future so I want to "make hay while the sun shines" and live fully present each day!

(Side note: this is the first picture of me with my real hair. My hair finally stopped falling out, I cut it really short and now its starting to grow. I have "chemo hair" - which typically grows back grey and curly. It's really not long enough to be curly...it's just fuzzy. :)

No Hugs for Me!!

Well, I made it to my 50th year before sustaining any broken bones...

I am celebrating the first week of being 50 with a fractured rib! I actually broke it Monday- on my birthday! Apparently I am fragile and hugging me too tightly can break me!! We think it's pretty funny, only it hurts too badly to laugh!

I talked with my doctor, and she didn't recommend driving all the way down to LA, waiting hours to get x-rayed, and subject myself to more radiation, only to be told that they don't do anything for broken ribs other than give pain killers while you wait a couple weeks for it to heal. Thankfully, she diagnosed me over the phone and called in a prescription.

Quintastic! - Singing a Song of Gratefulness.

Turning fifty hasnt been as traumatic as I thought it would be. I think the events of this past year has put everything into perspective. Considering that a few months ago I was lying in a hospital not sure if I was going to live or not, makng it to my next birthday is a welcomed event!

After spending almost a month in the hospital, a couple months in a wheel chair, needing to use a walker to learn walking again, going through several months of dialysis, taking loads of medicine, enduring six months of chemo and daily nausea, and losing my hair...I can honestly say that I feel great today!

I am so grateful for the health and strength I'm experiencing today! God has been so good to me! When I was very sick, I prayed that I would live long enough to see my first grandchild born and be able to attend my daughters' weddings. In June I was able to be at Jack's birth and Paige is getting married in September.

Everyday, I am grateful to be alive and enjoy my family, aware of the many gifts of grace I get to experience.

So, on my birthday this year, instead of feeling blue that I'm getting older, I made it a celebration of God's goodness and faithulness to me.

The Golden Alphabet: Psalm 119

Enjoying this devotional from Charles Spurgeon.

While I am reading the hard copy, I did find that there are many versions online to read as well. There's nothing like a dose of Spurgeon's beautiful, poetic writing to make your heart sing!

It's That Time Again...

We will be hosting international students again this year. We will have a mother and son for the month of August and then another long term student starting in September. (And hoping for a second one in October). These students will attend Renaissance Academy during the day- which is just 3-4 blocks away from our house- so they can walk to school. Which means it will be so much easier than when we hosted for Maranatha High School and had to drive several times a day across town.

This is a perfect way for me to supplement our income - to help pay for a second car and weddings! :)

Summer Barbeque

We are breaking out the grill tonite, hosting a BBQ and initiating our new patio by inviting about 20 people over for dinner. We are pretty much done with the new addition and back patio (just need to do landscaping now)- but didnt want to wait til everything was perfect before having people over. I think we would like to host a dinner once a month and eventually have the whole church over.
It's been a long season of isolation and solitude... I'm feeling so much better and am ready to make up for lost time. I'm ready for parties!

Congratulations!

Congratulations Ashley on landing your first job!

I took her around town last Friday looking for jobs. She went to restaurants, coffee shops, pharmacies and stores in Altdena and Old Town Pasadena. She has been very diligent and persistent in wanting to work and looking for jobs.

One guy told her to come back on Monday at 11 for an interview. And, today, when she went in, she came out hired!

She's working in the cafeteria on the William Carey campus. So nice for us because it's next door to the church office where Ron works and just three miles away so she can ride her bike.
