Many years ago Ron and I read a book that changed our lives and helped prepare us for decades of church life and ministry-the messy and painful parts. And, over twenty years later, we are still drawing valuable lessons from it. We've given several copies away so we don't currently own one-but it's moved up to the top of my list of must reads and is on its way from Amazon.
The Tale of Three Kings is the story of Saul, David and Absalom. It's a character study of the three men and asks us to evaluate what kind of leader and/or follower we are. Back in the days when we first read it, we were challanged to be "a David" as we served under a leader who we thought might be a Saul. And now, years later as leaders, we are being challenged once again to be a David.
Although the book is simply written, it cuts to the heart and filters out all the static and noise and turmoil and asks us just one thing... Will we trust God to accomplish his purposes?
When the going gets tough... Will I respond like a Saul or a David or an Absalom?
I want to be a David.
